I stopped drinking milk back when I was in middle school and our family went completely vegan almost 4 years ago. When I was growing up, there weren’t many options for alternative milk. I used to drink Rice Dream which wasn’t even in the refrigerated section and now when I go to the store there is an abundance of options. New companies have been putting dairy-alternative options out in the market because the demand has been growing over the years. Check out the below insert on how the dairy industry has been declining.
“Many dairy-alternative categories should continue seeing strong growth in 2020 as they have in recent years. The same is not true for dairy. Looking at Euromonitor data from May 2020 on the milk alternatives market, webcast speaker Mark Fahlin, business development, Cargill, said that while dairy milk’s market size is forecasted to decline 5.3% overall in 2020, milk alternatives’ market size is expected to grow 9.2% in 2020. This has been a long-term trend—declining dairy-milk sales alongside increasing milk-alternative sales—over the past decade and more. Fahlin, again reporting Euromonitor data from May, said that on a 15-year long-term CAGR basis during 2005-2020, dairy milk’s market size declined 1.5%, while milk alternatives’ grew 6.7%. (1)”
Contrary to the popular belief that milk does the body good and build strong bones, the opposite is true. It actually depletes calcium from the body due to the acidity of milk and our body trying to process it. It takes minerals from our bones. Our body is not meant to digest milk which is why so many people are lactose intolerant. We are the only species to drink milk after infancy, and it’s another mammal’s milk. Cows milk is meant for a baby cow to turn into a 400 pound cow! No wonder people have encountered so many issues over the years. Dairy products are inflammatory to the body, can increase our chances of developing cancer, can cause acne, bloating, and digestive issues. Not only does dairy have added hormones but dairy itself contains a lot of hormones.
Whatever your reason might be for drinking plant based milk – to be healthier, are lactose intolerant, and/or want to be environmentally conscious – we now have a lot of options. While this is great news, downsides to this are that is can be costly, not sustainable, and products contain preservatives and fortifications.
Shelf milk cartons are made with plastic and metal. Only 9% of plastics are recycled. The rest pollutes our Earth. Almond Cow has prevented 1,500,000+ single use cartons from ever being made. – Almond Cow
What’s better than a plant based milk? Making your own plant based milk! I don’t know about you, but there just aren’t enough hours in the day already so reading about how to make your own milk didn’t seem like a feasible option for our family. When I first saw the Almond Cow, I was like I have to have this! It’s one of those products that really makes your life easier and is truly sustainable. Normally to make your own milk you need to use a cheese cloth and strain it.
I am absolutely in love with the Almond Cow in an understatement. You can make any type of plant based milk using grains, seeds, and or nuts in 5 minutes! Then you have leftover pulp which we dry out and use as a glute free flour in recipes. They offer lots of pulp recipes too on their website. I have had it for almost 2 years and can’t tell you how enjoyable it’s been to make our own milk. It tastes so fresh and my kids like to help out. We have so m any varieties too – the possibilities are endless. Know what’s going in your milk and get one today!
